Journal Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Expert in Science and Engineering (ESE) is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and academic integrity. The journal adheres to the principles and guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). This statement outlines the ethical responsibilities of all parties involved in the publication process, including editors, reviewers, authors, and the publisher, to ensure a transparent, fair, and ethical scholarly publishing environment.

Ethical Responsibilities

Editors’ Responsibilities

Editors are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the editorial and peer-review process. Manuscripts submitted to ESE are evaluated solely on their academic merit, originality, clarity, and relevance to the journal’s scope, without discrimination or influence from commercial interests.

Editors must:

  • Ensure the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts throughout the review process
  • Take appropriate action in cases of suspected misconduct, including plagiarism, duplicate publication, data fabrication, or unethical research practices
  • Follow established procedures for handling ethical complaints and appeals
  • Maintain editorial independence and transparency in decision-making

Reviewers’ Responsibilities

Reviewers play a critical role in ensuring the quality and integrity of published research. Reviews must be objective, constructive, and timely.

Reviewers are expected to:

  • Treat all manuscripts as confidential documents
  • Avoid using unpublished material for personal advantage
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest
  • Notify the editor promptly if they are unable to complete a review within the agreed timeframe

Authors’ Responsibilities

Authors submitting to ESE must ensure that their work is original, accurate, and ethically conducted.

Authors are required to:

  • Submit manuscripts that are not under consideration or previously published elsewhere
  • Properly cite all sources and obtain permission for copyrighted material
  • Avoid plagiarism, data fabrication, and data falsification
  • Disclose all potential conflicts of interest
  • Ensure that all listed authors meet authorship criteria and approve the final manuscript
  • Promptly notify the editor of any significant errors discovered after publication

Duplicate Publication Policy

If duplicate publication or serious ethical misconduct is confirmed, ESE may take the following actions:

  1. Retraction of the published article
  2. Notification to the authors’ affiliated institutions
  3. Prohibition of future submissions to ESE for a period of one to five years, depending on the severity of the violation

Research Involving Human Subjects

Research involving human participants must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki (1975, revised 2013) and must receive approval from an appropriate ethics committee or Institutional Review Board (IRB). A statement of ethical approval and informed consent must be included in the manuscript.

Research Involving Animals

Studies involving animals must comply with internationally accepted ethical standards and follow the 3Rs principle:

  • Replacement
  • Reduction
  • Refinement

Authors must provide details of ethical approval, animal care, and welfare considerations. ESE endorses the ARRIVE guidelines for reporting animal research.

Originality and Plagiarism Policy

All submissions to ESE are screened using plagiarism detection software. Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism or excessive overlap with published work may be rejected or retracted. Authors must declare that their work is original and appropriately cited.

Citation Ethics

Authors must:

  • Cite only relevant and reliable sources
  • Avoid excessive self-citation or citation manipulation
  • Ensure all cited works have been read and accurately represented
  • Refrain from citing promotional or advertorial materials

Authorship and Contributorship

Authorship is limited to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. Contributions not meeting authorship criteria should be acknowledged appropriately.

Changes to Authorship

Any changes to authorship must be requested before manuscript acceptance, supported by written consent from all authors. Changes after acceptance or publication are not permitted.

Declaration of Competing Interests

All authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could influence their work. If no competing interests exist, authors must explicitly state this in the manuscript.

Use of Generative AI

The use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools is permitted only to improve language and readability. Such tools must not replace human authorship, analysis, or judgment. AI tools must not be listed as authors or cited as contributors.

Handling Allegations of Misconduct

Allegations of misconduct are handled confidentially and investigated in accordance with COPE guidelines. Proven misconduct may result in corrections, retractions, or sanctions.

Data Transparency and Availability

Authors are encouraged to provide data availability statements and share research data through recognized repositories when feasible, supporting transparency and reproducibility.
